You might be a Hypocrite…

You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

Revelation 3:1

Hypocrites are people who profess that they are believers in the Lord Jesus Christ; yet, their lives reveal a different, darker truth. Unfortunately, all hypocrites will one day hear from our Lord and Savior, “I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.” (Matthew 7:23)

It will be a greater tragedy for them than it is for those who simply rejected God because of their sins. Hypocrites go through the motions of faith, but deny the power of Christ and lack the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. If we profess that we are followers of Jesus Christ, then our words, actions, and thoughts would reveal this truth. However, we might be a hypocrites:

If we are driven towards acts of righteousness so that people will see and praise us, then we are hypocrites. (Matthew 6:2, 5)

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve behaved like a hypocrite. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness so that I may be counted as one of Your children. In Jesus’ name, amen.
