It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.
After being a stay-at-home mom for over 20 years, I was blessed to find a full-time job. Even though I enjoyed my work and was so grateful for God to open up the opportunity, I struggled with this new change of life. Every morning as I would drive to work, my heart was still in the home. I was feeling low about leaving the children, who were waking up and getting ready for school without mom being there to pray or encourage them first thing.
Elijah the prophet also struggled with being down in the dumps. He had just experienced one of the greatest miracles ever demonstrated: fire coming down from heaven and burning up a sacrifice. As a result of this God moment, the false prophets were killed, and the wicked Jezebel sent a message that Elijah was next. After being on the run for many days, Elijah was exhausted and asked God to take his life.
God’s response to Elijah included demonstrations of His power: a strong wind, an earthquake, and a fire. However, God wasn’t in those events. Rather, He revealed Himself to Elijah with a still, small voice, giving strength, instruction, and courage to move forward. As believers in Jesus Christ, we can hear the voice of God speak to our hearts and minds, especially when we are feeling low.
The voice of God is always in balance with His word, and His word will lead us out of the dumps and towards truth. The truth is that many times we need to remember who our God is and His great love for us. We can pull out of being in the dumps by being thankful for all things, both small and great. By sincerely thanking God, we can stay away from the wrong mindset like Elijah, rather being encouraged to move forward in faith.
Dear Lord, You are a great and mighty God. Help me to recognize and remember who You are in the midst of difficulty that can keep me feeling low. Amen.
