Have you ever had someone come to you with the wrong words at the wrong time? Even if they are speaking the truth, it’s hard to take it in. Choosing the right words at the right time is significant for believers as we conversate with unbelievers. Many people have been wounded by well-meaning Christians—as a result, they have difficulty hearing from anyone about Jesus Christ. Learn how the 6 A’s of how we can become better at choosing the right words:
Always question our motives.
“But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.” (1 Corinthians 11:31)
Ask direction from the Spirit of God.
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!”
(Psalm 143:10)
Allow wise family and friends to hear what we want to speak.
“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)
Acknowledge to God any pride or selfish motives in our hearts.
“I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. (Psalm 38:18)
Accept that not everyone may be open to hearing wisdom.
“Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you.” (Proverbs 9:8)
Activate love in our hearts by praying for the other person.
“And I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.” (Philemon 6)
Everyone may not receive our words even if we follow the 6 A’s. However, as long as we “speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15)—we have the opportunity to drop seeds of truth for the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts.
Dear Lord, I can fall short in speaking the right words at the right time. However, I want to do better to speak the truth in love at all times. Help me by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
