Hurry Up and Wait

Though it tarries, wait for it.

Habakkuk 2:3

When my son joined the military, we learned the term “hurry up and wait.” It seemed that he spent many hours to hurry to somewhere only to wait long periods of time for what was next. This is a discipline not only for earthly soldiers, but also for those in God’s army. We also can learn to hurry up and wait so that God can mature us towards the next step of faith.

Waiting isn’t easy, but it’s a necessary part of the Christian faith. Abraham was promised a seed that would outnumber the stars in the sky, but he had to wait for it until Sarah and he became an elderly couple. Joseph was given the dream of becoming a leader, but he had to wait for it through many tough experiences. David was anointed king by Samuel, but it was many years later after being chased like a criminal before he stepped into his position. Many prophets spoke of Jesus and God’s plan for redemption, yet it was hundreds of years later before the birth of the Messiah.

We get frustrated in our waiting period because we think we are ready for whatever is next. Yet, God is the great Orchestrator of life events and intersections of people. He has a plan for each of us as if there was only one of us. His future plan is for our good and to give us hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) If we really want to see the goodness of God in the land of the living…we will learn to wait patiently, obediently, and in expectation.

Satan will do everything he can to throw us off course to hurry up what we want God to do. Yet, we aren’t ignorant of his ways, by immersing ourselves in prayer and God’s word we will stay on the pathway of peace in our waiting period.

Prayer

Dear Lord, waiting isn’t fun, but I only want what You want for me in the right time and season of my life. Help me to be faithful in this time of waiting. In Jesus’ name, amen.
