Be Real with God

Have you ever been deceived by someone? It’s a terrible reality when we find out someone we trust has lied and deceived us. However, it’s not the worse deception—the worst is the self-deception. It’s when we tell ourselves that we’re okay when we’re not. When we continue to live a lifestyle that we know is wrong and yet still continue in it.

There comes a point when we need to be real with God and deal with our spiritual inequities in the faith. None of us are perfect “as it is written: ‘None is righteous, no, not one.’” (Romans 3:10) However, we can’t use this as an excuse for our sinfulness. What does it mean to be real with God?

It means being honest about the sin in our lives.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

It means being open about our temptations and weaknesses.
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

It means being true to live out the faith we profess with our mouths.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

It means being receptive of the Spirit’s voice and presence in our lives.
“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness.’” (Hebrews 3:7-8)

It means being in fellowship with other believers and confessing our faults.
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16)

It means being aware of our influence and representation of Christ around other people.
“Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.” (1 Peter 2:12)

It means being a true follower of Jesus Christ in every way.
“And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’” (Luke 9:23)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I long to be real with You. Deliver me from self-deception and lead me into the path of truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
