War Time

When you go out to war against your enemies, and see…

Deuteronomy 20:1

War has been declared on us whether we want to engage or not. We are in a personal inner war against the desires of our sinful nature. We are in an outer war against Satan and the culture of worldliness. When we find ourselves in a war and look at our enemies, it can be daunting. We see their strength in numbers, and then we see our weaknesses. Sometimes in the midst of spiritual battles, we can forget the most important fact—we are not in war by ourselves.

When the Israelites were counseled on their wartime affairs, they were reminded time after time that “you shall not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God is with you.” As it should be with us—we aren’t to be afraid of our enemies, regardless of their threats and intimidation. We remember that greater is He who is within us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

God has provided His presence and power to increase our confidence to overcome the sinful nature, the devil, and the world. We can never overcome anything in and of our own natural abilities. We can’t just think good thoughts; we need the power of God to destroy evil thoughts and habits that seek to bring us down. We can’t just wish the devil away; we need the word of God to silence and defeat him. We can’t just ignore the worldliness that surrounds us; we need God’s power to overcome.

God is with us, and He is more than able to help us win every single battle in our lives. Our part is to submit to Him, obey His commandments, and walk in faith. We are more than conquerors in Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Dear Lord, sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the battles in my life. But I look to You as my shield and strength to overcome every evil thing. Amen.
