Stinkin’ Manna

However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.

Exodus 16:20

Immediately after the great miracle of crossing the Red Sea, the Israelites were tested by God. He rained manna from heaven for them to make bread. The Lord made it clear that He expected them to follow His instructions and obey.

The instructions for the manna was clear enough for a child to understand: Gather just what the family needed for one day and don’t save it for the next day except when gathering twice as much on the sixth day (in preparation for the Sabbath). However, it was evident when some Israelites disobeyed and attempted to save the manna for the next day because it smelled and had maggots in it.

God was teaching them to trust in Him every single day, that He would meet their needs daily. Some of them were hardheaded, and despite God’s continual provision, they would grumble, complain, and disobey. Before we judge the Israelites, we must consider if we too fall into their same pattern.

The stinkin’ manna in our lives is evident when we don’t trust God. We keep looking back in the past at missed opportunities and regrets when God wants us to continue to look to Him daily to meet our daily needs. Our stinkin’ manna is evident when our lives give off the odor of carnality and living for ourselves instead of living for God. We feed our fleshly desires by consuming the pleasures and pursuits of the world instead of looking to God to provide what we need when we need it.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to not hoard the stinkin’ manna of unbelief in my life. Instead, help me to begin each day with trusting in You regardless of the circumstances, knowing that You will meet all my needs according to Your riches in glory. Amen.
