Watch out for Presumptuous Sins!

Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins.

Psalm 19:13

Have you ever been presumptuous with God? When we disregard the limitations set by God, we are being presumptuous. It’s when we test God instead of trusting in Him. In Matthew 4:7-10, Satan tempted Jesus; however, His response was, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” The devil will tempt us to test God. In order to not fall in presumptuous sins, we need to consider the following:

1) God doesn’t have to prove Himself to us (Psalm 14:1).
God is God, and we are not. If the Lord has revealed Himself to us in some special way, it is only because of His great love and grace for us. He doesn’t owe us explanations for everything in our lives.

2) God expects us to humble ourselves under His mighty hand (1 Peter 5:6).
Some people believe that God “understands” when we sin as though He were some old, grandfatherly type figure patting us on the head. However, God wants us to repent of our sins as well as humbly seek His forgiveness and mercy.

3) God provides us with wisdom in our decision making (James 1:5).
Because the Lord gives us wisdom with great liberality, we have no excuse for giving ourselves over to worldly foolishness. We have the ability to dig deep into God’s word and find truth if we desire it.

4) God is in control (Job 42:2).
There’s absolutely nothing that happens on this earth without God’s knowledge. He is the powerful Creator of this world and everything in it. Never second guess His awesome power to save and deliver us.

5) God will uphold His word (Isaiah 55:11).
God’s word will accomplish everything He sends it to do. Nothing in this world, including Satan, can thwart His hand when He is ready to move on our behalf. His promises will never fail even until the end of days.

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve taken You for granted. I pray for the strength and wisdom to follow You with all of my heart. Amen.
