Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you
As we get older, our bodies are constantly reminding us that we are not meant to live forever on this earth. Along with new aches and pains, we don’t get up as quickly and easily as we were once accustomed to, and we find ourselves having to take greater care of our physical bodies. The Bible teaches that we are not to worship our bodies; rather, we are to live mindful that the Holy Spirit lives within our bodies.
While our inward person is being renewed day by day, our outward appearance is fading away with the evidence of wrinkles, aches in our bones, and graying hair. While many in the world do everything they can to retain the appearance of youthfulness, we should continue to show the glory within yet still take care of our bodies.
In addition to maintaining the spiritual and emotional disciplines as directed by Scripture, we also need to take care of our temples with healthy eating and regular exercise. These disciplines are important at every age if we are going to be active in kingdom work for God. Some of us are sick and unable to minister because of how we’ve abused the body that God gave us. The earlier we decide “enough is enough” and do the right things with our temples, the better we can serve the Lord and others.
Some of us may need help from the medical community, and others of us need to do what we already know—eat right and exercise. The human body is amazing in how quickly it responds to healthy eating and moderate activity. In conjunction with prayer, this new discipline and mindset is completely possible for those in Christ Jesus.
Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I didn’t take proper and balanced care of my temple. Give me the strength and endurance to follow through with the disciplines of eating right and exercising. Amen.
