Tearing Down Mental Strongholds

Divider

Take every thought captive to obey Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5

Have you ever struggled with recurring thoughts that aren’t edifying? It could be a memory from a hurtful conversation, or it could be replaying a scene in your life that was sinful. As much as you would prefer to not think this way, it feels impossible to control your thoughts, and you are constantly being brought down because of them.

It can be that way sometimes for us; however, we don’t have to live under mental strongholds that constantly bring us down. Our Father in heaven longs for better thoughts for us. He wants us to have the mind of Christ so that we can freely do His will without restraints. Yet mental strongholds don’t go down because we just want them to—we must actively and intently bring them down.

Our thoughts can be managed if we are willing to train our minds to think differently through the word of God. The first step to being free from mental strongholds is to pray for God’s help and direction. We must confess any sins on our part that may be feeding the strongholds. It’s also helpful to ask God to help us stay on guard when thoughts trickle in when we are less ready to deal with them, i.e., feeling overtired, stressed, overworked.

We can also find a Scripture that speaks to our hearts and minds concerning our situation, such as 1 Corinthians 1:10, Philippians 4:7-8, and 1 Peter 1:13. There are also Scriptures that speak directly to our situation. For example, if we struggle with fear, we speak 2 Timothy 1:7; if we struggle with feeling alone, we speak Hebrews 13:5; or if we struggle with doubt, we speak Hebrews 11:6. Mental strongholds are defenseless against God’s word mixed with faith.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray for the strength and resiliency to resist destructive mental strongholds. Help me to meditate and speak Your word for deliverance. Amen.
