Stretch Assignments

Each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

Romans 12:3

Oftentimes in the business world, employees who want to move up in the company are given stretch assignments. These assignments aren’t set up for their failure but rather to help them expand their talents, gifts, and mental abilities to accomplish a project. Many times employees don’t know what they can do until they are in a position where they need to figure things out for themselves.

God often gives His people stretch assignments as well. He allows us to deal with trials and situations that we feel very incapable of working out. It’s in these times that we discover more about God’s power within us that gives us the ability to overcome insurmountable problems.

If God were to ask our permission for these faith-stretching assignments, most (if not all) of us would respond with a resounding “no, thank you.” Many times these tasks are exceptionally difficult and we feel like there’s no way this situation can ever work itself out.

However, it’s in these tasks that we discover our faith in God, our ability to pray through difficulty, and our deepening understanding of God’s word. While we are in the process of the assignment, we are growing up spiritually, and it’s evident to those around us. Our prayers become more intense and focused. Our everyday choices become more in tune with the application of living God’s word and not just hearing it.

Even better, we can believe God for the miraculous and we aren’t afraid to share our beliefs with other people even if they aren’t believers. When our stretch assignment has been completed, we will then be more ready for the next one because we know what our God can do even with a tiny mustard seed of faith!

Prayer

Dear Lord, I feel like I’m in a faith-stretching assignment that is well beyond me. I need your wisdom and insight to finish this task well. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In His Service,
