Keep your Eye on the Ball

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Colossians 3:2

A major key to winning a tennis game is keeping my eye on the ball. If I start to think about what I need to do when the game is over—I will lose focus on the ball. If I begin to think about the last play I missed—I may lose the next point. Keeping my eye and focus on where the ball is going and how I intend to respond is key to how I play the game.

What I find is true on the tennis court, I also find true in my personal and professional life. If I keep my eye on what is most important, I tend to make less decisions that I’ll regret in the future. It’s not easy because there are many distractions pulling me away from the focus on God and others. I’m tempted to focus on myself and what I want—which leads me closer to the desires of my flesh and less to the leading of the Spirit. How can we learn to keep our eye on what is most important day to day?

#1) Start every single day with a word of prayer to God.
It doesn’t have to be long or complicated. Simply start with being thankful for another opportunity to live out the day. Move forward in prayer with asking God to lead you in the right conversation, attitudes, and actions that will bring Him glory. Ask the Lord for wisdom, grace, and strength to end the day successfully.

#2) Read Bible scriptures or devotions to focus your mind on what matters most.
Again, it doesn’t have to be a long reading or study. Simply find a passage or read a daily devotion to align your heart and mind to the truths of God’s word. While you may not remember every word, try to capture the main theme to think about during the day.

#3) Listen to spiritual songs or hymns throughout the day.
When there are breaks in the day or on your way to work—listen to songs that build up your faith in God. These songs will replay in your mind while you’re at work or school. Seek out music that focus on the goodness and grace of God in your life.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I get distracted too much during the day. Help me to set aside time every day to pray to You, study or meditate on Your word, and listen to spiritual songs to draw me to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
