Forgetting what lies behind.
Can you imagine how difficult life would be if we all walked forward but looked behind us? We would run into doors, buildings, and other people all the time. Our walk from the car to our job would be precarious, and we would get to our desks with bumps and bruises. In the same manner, our Christian journey isn’t constantly looking back and asking ourselves “what if.”
This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t learn lessons from our past or that we shouldn’t make penance or seek forgiveness from those we have hurt. Rather, it’s a choice to trust God with our past, present, and future. Many of us would love to go back to the past and make better decisions. It would be awesome to have a “redo” in past relationships, financial decisions, or career choices.
However, God uses our good, bad, and ugly decisions to develop us to be more like Jesus Christ. He’s more than able to heal us of our past mistakes and guide us towards a more successful future in the Lord. If we hold onto the past and constantly replay what we should’ve or could’ve done, we might miss our day of opportunity to do better in the future.
God has great things in store for those who have shifted their focus from ‘what was’ to ‘what can be.’ There’s nothing impossible because the Lord has provided everything we need to be successful spiritually, emotionally, and physically in this world. We need to draw close to Him in prayer and study of His word so we can clearly sense His direction over our lives.
We can’t run from our past, but we can learn from it to do better with our future choices. Because we walk with the Lord, we are going to be led in the right direction.
Dear Lord, You are my hope for the future. I can’t redo my past, and I want to do better in Christ every day until You take me home to live with You forever. Amen.
