Spiritual Gifts from God

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another.

1 Peter 4:7

Have you ever received a really good gift from someone who knew you well? It’s not that the gift was necessarily expensive, but rather it was exactly what you wanted or needed. There’s something beautiful about a gift that demonstrates a friend’s love and knowledge of who you are.

The best Giver of all time is God and He gives spiritual gifts to each of us. Our gifts from the Lord are specific and unique to how He made us. When we discover our spiritual gifts, we are enabled by God’s grace to use them to glorify Jesus and serve the body of Christ. The gifts of the Spirit are listed in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Romans 12:6-8, and 1 Peter 4:10-11.

We can understand the different spiritual gifts in the church by studying the scriptures. Our gifts are different just as the parts of the human body are diverse and yet work in unison. This is the body of Christ—we are gifted differently, yet we are unified in the Spirit. We all have our individual role in ministry to use our gifts for the edifying of the body.

We are given gifts not for ourselves, but for serving others. It’s important that we receive our spiritual gifts without coveting other people’s gifts. Every single believer in the body of Christ has a gift that is necessary for a healthy ministry. Not all of our gifts are readily noticeable, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t just as important.

A spiritual gift from God is not to be wasted—we need to be actively engaged in ministry so that believers are encouraged to move forward in the faith. The Lord wants us to step out in faith and use our gifts from Him.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to use my spiritual gift for your purpose in the ministry. I pray for discernment about my gift and how you want me to use it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
