I was in a Bible study when one of the women shared something profound: “our sin is not a single bullet, but rather a grenade that shatters everything it touches.” When we are tempted to sin, Satan attempts to deceive us that our sin won’t hurt anyone, that no one knows what’s going on, and that God understands our weaknesses.
However, the truth is that our sin is not secret no matter how much we attempt to cover it up. King David was the most respected and powerful man in the nation. When his men were out fighting for the nation, David decided to stay back at the palace. Sitting up high over the city, he noticed a beautiful woman taking a bath. He found out that she was the wife of one of his most loyal fighting men. David followed his passion to have her brought to the palace so he could have sex with her. Bathsheba left discreetly and that was it, right?
This one night of passion landed a pregnancy that triggered a series of strategic, yet disastrous results and pain for generations. David manipulated Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband to drunkenness and sent him home to sleep with his wife. However, being a just man, Uriah refused to enjoy the pleasures of his wife while his men were fighting. David then did the unthinkable—sent Uriah back with secret papers setting up his death. After Uriah was killed—David married Bathsheba. Only a handful of people were aware of this sin, but what matter most is that God knew and would not let David get away with it. (2 Samuel 11:3-12:1-24)
Many of us wouldn’t even imagine doing such craziness—yet neither would’ve David back when he was a shepherd out in the fields. None of us are perfect and all of us are susceptible to sin if we allow it to take root in our hearts. Our sin is not secret—we can confess and repent of it. God promises in 1 John 1:9 to forgive and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. Forget the lies of the enemy, our sin is a grenade that shatters families, destinies, purpose, careers, etc. Let us live as God’s people with integrity and surrender to His will.
Dear Lord, I know my sin is not secret. Keep my heart tender to Your presence and the truth of Your word so that I may be forgiven and cleansed. In Jesus’ name, amen.
