Never Say Never

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

1 Corinthians 10:12

Have you ever found yourself in a place that you never saw coming? It’s a pretty overwhelming experience, especially if you felt that you lived a faithful life, even though you weren’t perfect. Sometimes, as seasoned believers, we are deceived by our own confidence in ourselves and our Christian practices. And before we know it we are knocked flat on our backs and wondering how in the world everything happened so quickly.

It’s in those times that we need to take a step back and reassess where we stand in God’s plan for our lives. Many times we start looking at our decisions and questioning if God really was involved in them. We find our hearts torn between wanting to believe God is in control and wondering if life’s circumstances just take over.

When our “never” happens to us, it’s an opportunity for us to grow in our relationship with God. As much as we want to believe in a series of circumstances, there’s nothing that happens to us that God doesn’t control. He allows our pain and disbelief to mold us into people of unwavering faith that has been tested over time.

As children of God, we aren’t spoiled brats who get our way all the time. Instead, we are being pruned and shaped in the faith to purge us of our selfish and carnal ways. As we are cleaned of the flesh, we are constantly being filled with the Spirit, who gives us hope in the midst of despair.

It’s a painful season that every believer will go through at some time in our faith walk. However, as with every season, there’s a beginning and an end—we will come out on the other side as pure gold.

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I was confident in myself instead of being confident in You. Strengthen me to get through this hardship so that You will receive the glory. Amen.
