What To Do When We Have Sinned

Divider

Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.

Acts 3:19

Hosea the prophet was sent by God to warn the people of Israel about their sins of idol worship. Gomer, Hosea’s wife, was unfaithful and left him to pursue her pleasures. After a time, God commanded Hosea to pursue and love Gomer. He had to purchase his wife most likely from a slave auction for 15 shekels of silver and one-half homers of barley (Hosea 1:1-9, 3:1-3).

God allowed Hosea to experience what He dealt with when the people of Israel committed spiritual adultery with the worship of idols. Hosea’s relationship with Gomer was symbolic of God’s enduring love for His people. Gomer’s life serves as an example to everyone who has ever messed up and needed God’s grace and mercy.

As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are free from the power of sin. If we choose to sin, we have a Savior Who receives us back to Himself. We don’t have to remain in a sinful state. There is peace in finding forgiveness and restoration in the Lord that we can’t find anywhere else. There’s hope in the Lord for those who repent and turn away from their sins. He wants us to be free to experience every good thing He has for us.

We can take the seven steps from repentance towards remaining true to God.

Step #1) Repent of our sins (Acts 3:19).

Step #2) Return to our God (Isaiah 55:7).

Step #3) Receive His forgiveness (Jeremiah 31:34).

Step #4) Remember He will be with us through the consequences (Hebrews 13:5).

Step #5) Restore what we have taken from others (Luke 19:8).

Step #6) Renew a right relationship with God every day (Psalm 51:10).

Step #7) Remain true to the light that has delivered us from the darkness (Luke 1:79).

Prayer

Dear Lord, I’ve fallen away from what I know is right to do. I pray for forgiveness and restoration, leading me to true freedom in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
