What was the world like before the frantic busyness all around us? How many of us have learned the discipline of being silent before God? It’s when we pause and reflect on His goodness that we begin to understand our calling at a deeper level. Yet, this is difficult for many of us because we are drawn to accomplishments, the expectations of others, and the fulfilling of our own selfish desires.
There’s a time to speak and a time to be silent in prayer. We can miss the mark of hearing from God when we don’t pause to be silent. When Elijah was running from Jezebel, God spoke to Him not with a strong wind, earthquake, or fire. Rather, it was a still, small voice.
Many of us long to hear that voice of God; yet, we are unwilling to shut down all the noise around us. We want to peruse social media, watch our favorite shows on TV, or enjoy our recreations. While these things aren’t bad in and of themselves, they can be stumbling blocks from hearing the voice of God.
The silent night, holy night is a time of reflection of God’s goodness over our lives. It allows the sweet music of worship to rise up in our souls. The Holy Spirit confirms the truths we know from God’s word and He gives us direction on the next steps we need to take.
Being silent before God helps us to remember the night that Jesus was born. We know that our peace comes from Him. His birth was a gift to all mankind and it continues to shine the light of truth every Christmas season. Let’s be silent and hear the voice of God.
Dear Lord, I need to hear Your voice every day. Lead me to those places of silence and solitude so that I may know You more. In Jesus’ name, amen.
