Dressing the Part

Divider

Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire.

1 Timothy 2:9

Many women spend a great deal of time on their appearance because we want to look good in our attire. Whether we work in or outside the home, dressing in the right outfit gives us a greater confidence in the work we do. When we feel good about how we look, we tend to reflect it to those around us. When we feel uncertain, it can unintentionally leak out to others as though we are less ready to face the challenges.

When we dress ourselves modestly, appropriately, and respectfully, our countenance can reflect the glory and presence of God. It’s not because we are wearing the latest fashions; rather, it’s the presence of God in our words and actions. We can be more confident in His leading because we are not distracted by shirts that are too low, skirts that are too short, or clothing that is too tight. Dressing in this fashion will always result in attention that will not be in our best interest.

If we find ourselves tempted to wear an outfit that is too revealing, it’s a good time to reflect on the reason. Are we looking for attention from men? Are we feeling insecure and seeking security with our clothing? And even if we don’t know exactly why we want to wear something inappropriate (even slightly), do we have the gumption to change our clothes?

It’s a great step of maturity for any woman who responds to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and changes her clothing to be more appropriate. God already knows our hearts, and He wants only the best for His daughters.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for Your provision of clothing in my life. Help me to reflect your goodness and grace in my life with attire that is modest and respectable with a balance that still reflects good taste and fashion. Amen.
