Releasing Prodigals to the Lord

Divider
Return, O faithless children, declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 3:14

It’s incredibly heartbreaking for a believing parent to watch their children turn away from the Lord. Many parents have warned their children over and over again about living for their own pursuits. Yet, these children (both young and old) continue to defy what they know in their hearts is the right thing to do. What are the five P’s to help parents of prodigals to release their children?

P – Pray every day for their hearts and minds to change towards God. (James 5:16) Praying every day releases them to God for His great work to take place in their lives. He knows what needs to be done to get their attention.

P – Pull back from nagging, scolding, and warning them of what they already know. (Proverbs 15:12) Resist the temptation to keep after them with our words. Many times it can backfire because they will harden their hearts from the truth because of the constant nagging.

P – Press forward in faith that God hears our prayers for our children. (1 John 5:14-15) We walk in faith and not by sight. Therefore we trust in God to be working on their hearts even if we don’t see it with our own eyes.

P – Point every fear, doubt, and regret towards the truth of God’s word. (2 Corinthians 10:4-5)
Satan will use this as an opportunity to set fear in our hearts about the prodigals. However, God is greater and He can draw our children back to Himself at His appointed time.

P – Pursue God’s calling and purpose on your life. (Philippians 1:6) Sometimes parents can allow a prodigal’s bad decisions to take over their lives. Yet, God still has a calling on every parent’s life to do His will and trust each child to God’s loving hands.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I need You to help me release my prodigal child to Your hands. Help me to intercede and trust in You to bring them into the kingdom of God. In Jesus’ name, amen.
