Truth Hurts

Hear, all you peoples!

2 Chronicles 18:27

Micaiah spoke the truth to the kings in direct opposition to the 400 false prophets. As a result, he was struck in the face by the prophets’ leader and sent to prison. King Ahab ordered him to be imprisoned with meager food and water until he returned. Micaiah responded that if Ahab returned in peace, God hadn’t spoken through him. While he was being carried out, the true prophet shouted to the people, “Hear, all you peoples!”

Many of us have been persecuted because we have spoken the truth. It’s not easy because we love the people around us. However, the truth hurts and sometimes they will lash back at us with hurtful words. We must speak wisely and in love by listening for direction from the Holy Spirit, as He sees all things. When we speak the truth and relay what the Spirit lays on our hearts, many times they will be convicted and respond in repentance or in anger.

It’s not our responsibility to make people change their minds and do right. It’s our responsibility to do like Micaiah—to speak the truth even when it hurts. Micaiah prophesied that Ahab would die in battle. Ahab didn’t believe Micaiah, but he still went into war dressed as a common soldier instead of his normal kingly clothes. Perhaps he believed that he could figure a way out around the prophecy. However, a soldier randomly released his arrow, which went right through a small opening in Ahab’s armor, and he was mortally wounded. The odds of that happening are huge but not when we consider how God’s truth will happen regardless of how others try to avoid it.

God’s truth will come to pass. Those who choose ungodliness will suffer eternal damnation, and those who choose righteousness in Jesus Christ will have everlasting life. The truth hurts, but it also heals when taken to heart and followed.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to live the truth so that I can speak it boldly and without fear. I pray for Your wisdom to speak the truth in love to all people. In Jesus’ name, amen.
