It’s Always Something

If a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all

Ecclesiastes 11:8

Have you ever had those days when it seems like everything goes wrong? You just get all of your kids healthy and the dog gets sick? You get all your bills paid and the refrigerator breaks down? You study all night for a test and the questions are not what you studied? You finally get to the place at your job where you feel comfortable and the company changes overnight?

We live in a world that’s always changing. It would be better to expect the unexpected than it is to expect calm. While we can’t always control all the happenings in our lives, we can control how our response to them. In one day, Job lost all his money and all of his children. If that weren’t enough, he was then afflicted with sores from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet. Yet he still gave God glory and didn’t turn away from his faith.

Job didn’t know what we know today. We have insider’s knowledge that God is in control of everything that happens to us. We also have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit who gives us power from God to press on in spite of our circumstances.

Our response to the fact that ‘it’s always something’ is that God has a plan and purpose for our lives. We respond to our situations in faith knowing that everything is working out for our good. There’s no place for fear nor uncertainty because God has given us a spirit of power, love, and sound mind.

Good things will happen this week. Bad things will happen this week. Yet everyday there’s breath in our bodies, it’s an opportunity to give God glory no matter what is going on in our lives.

Prayer

Dear Lord, sometimes I feel so pressed by many things and I forget that you are in control. Help me to pause and remember to give you glory no matter what my day brings. Amen.
