“While he was still speaking”

Job 1:16

When Job was hit with disaster after disaster, the Scriptures begin with “while he was still speaking.” Before one servant could finish explaining the sudden death of Job’s children, another was probably out of breath trying to explain another loss, and before he could finish, another servant began the bad news. Although Job didn’t accuse God of any wrongdoing, he was reeling from the pain and sought to make sense of it.

Sometimes when we are going through great pain and loss, one after the other, we may want to lift our hands and ask, “Seriously God?” We live in a culture that believes if we do everything the way we are supposed to, our lives will be comfortable and carefree; however, this isn’t the truth of Scripture. Rather, Jesus said that “in this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33), and Paul wrote to Timothy that “everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12). As believers of Jesus Christ, we must come to embrace the fact that suffering will be a part of our journey, whether we choose it or not.

Looking from the outside, many people may wonder why we became Christians and hold to our testimony in spite of suffering and persecution. It’s because as daughters of the Creator, we have the hope of God in our hearts through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. We press on, not because we hope to do well in this temporary life but towards the future hope of heaven.

So, my sisters in Christ, let’s not give up when the going gets tough. Instead, let’s commit our spirits and transform our thinking towards God’s strength and presence to help us carry on. We were created for a purpose, and He has a great plan for those who press on in spite of the trials.

Seriously? Yes, our God is serious about us living a righteous life, even during the tumultuous times of life. Amen.
