How to Deal with FEAR

Divider
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

2 Timothy 1:7

When my kids were young and had bad dreams I taught 2 Timothy 1:7 as way of overcoming their fears of going back to sleep. As adults, we may or may not get back to sleep right away after a nightmare; however, our undealt with fears can keep us from doing what God has for us to complete. Learn how to deal with FEAR:

F – Face and reject your fear (For God gave us a spirit NOT of fear…)
Fear is not your friend. Fear is not a gift that we have to accept. Instead we turn to face it and reject it on the premise that it doesn’t come from God. Our God has called us like He did Joshua in Joshua 1:9 – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” He’s also promised us in Hebrews 13:5 “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

E – Engage the power of Christ (but of power…)
This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. “And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.” (1 Corinthians 6:14) It’s the power of the Holy Spirit who is within every single heart of every single believer. The power of God keeps us from being afraid because we know that “for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

A – Accept the love of Christ (and love…)
His love is unconditional, unique, individual, and complete. We can find our peace and comfort because of the love of God. He reveals in 1 John 4:16-20 the depth of His love- “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.

R – Reinvigorate the mind of Christ (and self-control/sound mind)
As we infiltrate our mind with the word of God more than the TV, social media, or people’s opinions—we become more resistant to fear. We know in Hebrews 4:12 that “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Our confidence isn’t shaken when we are grounded in the teachings of Christ.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I resist fear as I accept your power, love, and sound mind to overcome. Lead me in the right ways to walk in courage and confidence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
