You are the salt of the earth
Have you ever had a dish or dessert that was perfectly seasoned and melted in your mouth with great delight? There’s the enlightened look on your face when you take that first bite. Or perhaps you close your eyes and sit back to savor that delicious moment. It’s almost equally as pleasurable to enter a home full of the wonderful aromas of your favorite dishes being prepared as you wait in excited expectation.
When believers live life to the fullest of God’s calling and will, we bring that fragrant and tasty delight to our Father’s heart. We refuse a dull day-to-day existence and instead are driven forward by God’s purpose and plan. Our energy motivates others to get up and get moving.
Our spiritual saltiness is reflected in how we live our Christian lives. A salty Christian refuses to let adversity or circumstances keep us from fulfilling our calling from God. We see a mountain as an opportunity to show God’s glory rather than an excuse to quit. In contrast, a bland Christian views the adversity as a reason to shake off the responsibility of fulfilling God’s purpose so they can fulfill their desires instead.
If we become tasteless Christians, we are most like the church in Laodicea when Jesus rebuked them, saying “I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. … because you are lukewarm … I will spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:15-16). Being spiritually on fire and spicy for God’s calling leaves a great legacy for others to emulate and grow in their faith. It’s the difference between living an exciting adventure with Jesus or a meaningless existence of ritualistic busyness.
Dear Lord, I want to be spiritually salty and used by you to win the world to Jesus Christ. Reveal any parts of my life that may be bland in my faith and ignite a true response of faithfulness in me. Amen.
