God Looks at the Heart

For the LORD sees not as man sees … but the LORD looks on the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7

Have you ever bit into a beautiful-looking piece of fruit only to discover it was rotten on the inside? It’s a yucky feeling that you don’t soon forget. Sometimes we are enamored with people the same way. We see someone who is successful, smart, or outwardly attractive; and we can make assumptions about them before we ever get to really know them.

When Samuel was looking for the next king of Israel, he assumed it would be somebody similar to Saul—tall in appearance yet humble in nature. When he first looked at Eliab, David’s oldest brother, he immediately thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.” However, God reminded him to not choose based on his appearance but based on God’s leading because He sees the hearts of all people.

After God rejected each one of Jesse’s sons, Samuel had to ask if there were more sons because he knew the Lord directed him to that place. It’s interesting to note that Jesse didn’t think or perhaps intentionally left David out. As the youngest son, he may not have even been considered to attend a consecration and sacrifice. Yet he was exactly the one whom God chose to be king.

Sometimes we are passed by at home, work, school, or in our communities by those who can only judge by outward appearances. However, our hope and destiny don’t lie in the hands of people, rather in the hands of God. He will position and place us in His perfect timing. Our value to those we are surrounded by isn’t limited by our physical appearance, talents, education, or abilities. God sees our hearts. God knows our destiny. We will arrive right on time according to His will.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to rise above the limited view of those who don’t know my heart. I look to You to place me exactly where You want at the appointed time. In Jesus’ name, amen.
