Because You Showed Up

From the time that he made him overseer in his house … the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had.

Genesis 39:5

Many of us work because we have to pay our bills, take care of our families, and enjoy the fruit of our labor. We expect to get paid for the good work we do, and as believers we should be the best employees in the workplace. Yet because we represent Jesus Christ, there should be a blessing over our place of employment.

Regardless of where Joseph worked, there was a blessing on the place. Potiphar’s home and everything he owned prospered because Joseph showed up. When in the prison, the jailer could have more time on his hands because Joseph showed up. When Joseph was made second in command over Egypt, Pharoah didn’t worry about the famine because Joseph showed up.

When we show up for work, there should be the blessing of the Lord on the place. We show up bringing God’s presence of love and joy with us. When there’s tension and stress on the job, we bring peace with us. When there’s a seemingly unsolvable problem, we can seek God’s wisdom and insight to provide the right answers.

Those we work with should sense our greater commitment because of our relationship with the Lord. Our resolve to give our best work is a testimony of how we work for a higher calling to God. We work as to the Lord and not necessarily for promotions or raises. When we are blessed in this way, we give the glory to God and not to ourselves.

The grace of God enlarges our capacity to do good work every time we show up. His grace is enough to help us deal with difficult bosses and/or co-workers. Because of His grace, we don’t have to get caught up in controversies, gossip, or fears. When we show up, God shows up. And anything can happen from there.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray for Your favor and grace on me when I show up for work. Give me insight on how to encourage others when things are tough at work. In Jesus’ name, amen.
