All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful.
As believers in Jesus Christ, we have a significant amount of freedom. We don’t always realize it because it comes to us without effort on our part. God fills our soul with grace, and we immediately sense His freedom from the bondage of sin, shame, and regret. We are filled with love and hope that give us the freedom to forgive as well as love those around us.
Sometimes in this incredible feeling of freedom, we overestimate ourselves in thinking that we are free to do whatever we want. However, everything isn’t beneficial towards our spiritual growth. We will need to take efforts to filter our wants and needs through prayer and Bible study to make sure they align with God’s will for our lives.
Those things in our lives that aren’t beneficial aren’t necessarily sinful things. Sometimes they are good things but not necessarily helpful. For instance, eating candy, ice cream, and potato chips isn’t sinful; however, if eaten in an abundance, they can cause future problems with our health and can even become addictive. This is the same with our recreational choices–watching TV, surfing the Internet, going to a show, working out, etc. These items, taken with moderation and scrutiny, aren’t all bad; however, if we find ourselves choosing them over spending time in prayer or Bible study, this could be a problem.
As believers in Christ Jesus, we are to enjoy the life that He has given us to the full extent of His grace. When we balance our choices with integrity and discipline, we will enjoy and still have God’s favor and blessing over our lives.
Dear Lord, I want to live a balanced Christian life. I pray for wisdom in making choices that will not hinder my spiritual growth in Christ Jesus. Amen.
