Anyone can trust in God when life is going smooth, but can we trust when the pitfalls are in every step? In the last few years of my life, I’ve struggled with trusting completely in God. Sometimes my circumstances overwhelm me and I wonder what have I done to deserve such pain? I want to throw up my hands and give up trying. Yet, every single time I find myself in the pit of not trusting in God—He shows up.
God can show up in family and friends who encourage me to press forward. He shows up in a word spoken in a sermon or song. The Lord shows up with the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit in my darkest hours. Many times God shows up when He illuminates His word to my soul.
When it’s difficult to trust in God for my next steps, I’ve learned to trust in what I’ve experienced in the faith and have learned from the Bible. God gave Abraham the grace to trust Him to have a son. He gave Jacob the grace to trust when he was reunited with his brother. He gave Joseph the grace to trust when he was sold into slavery, sentenced to prison, and eventually made a ruler. He gave Moses the grace to trust in approaching Pharaoh. He gave David the grace to trust when he faced Goliath.
When it’s difficult to trust, make yourself look back on all the times He proved Himself faithful. Trusting completely is difficult, but it’s also the most rewarding gift of being a follower of Jesus Christ. Your faith journey will lead you to places you never saw coming and your trust in God will be tested. Yet, whatever comes, God will give you the grace to trust Him even more. Your life will become a testimony of trusting in God no matter what comes your way.
Dear Lord, I pray for the grace to trust You more even in spite of the pain and problems. I know that You are able to carry me through. In Jesus’ name, amen.
