It is better to live in a desert land than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.
Those who live in the desert face many perils such as oppressive heat, unquenchable thirst, painful sandstorms, and cold nights. Yet according to God’s word, it’s better to live in the desert than it is to live with a discontented woman. It’s our responsibility as women of God to fill our homes with God’s peace rather than constant turmoil.
We can’t control the actions of others (perhaps husbands or other family members), yet we can control our own fleshly responses to them. Through the grace and mercy of God, we have a way to escape the temptation to constantly harbor bitterness, anger, and resentment in our homes (1 Corinthians 10:13). When we get frustrated, we can resist becoming quarrelsome and fretful women by using the acronym P-E-A-C-E.
P – Pray for God’s help and strength. Many of us rely first on ourselves, or we call on friends to deal with the mess in our homes. We can call on God first to calm our hearts and give us wisdom.
E – Expect God to move on your behalf. Even if we are dependent on the actions of others, we are completely dependent on God to move mountains for us.
A – Act as though today were your last day on earth. Do you want your family to remember you as a discontented, angry person? Or could their memory of you be someone who trusted in God even in incredibly difficult situations?
C – Close the door of your mind to the suggestions of the devil. Satan will take advantage of a situation to bring unclean and sinful thoughts to your mind. Be reactive and resist evil thoughts with the word of God.
E – Elevate your conversations to be edifying, encouraging, and loving to your family members. God will give you the right words to say if you ask Him, even in the midst of a conversation.
As you follow the way of P-E-A-C-E, God will make your house become a peaceful habitation where everyone who lives and visits can sense the presence of the Spirit.
Dear Lord, without Your help my house will be a desert of discontentment and discord. I pray for Your peace and presence to fill my home. Help me to follow Your ways of P-E-A-C-E. Amen.
