How to Hear God’s Voice

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27

Many of us struggle with knowing how to hear God’s voice. It’s problematic because we have so many other voices and things calling out for our attention. However, God speaks to those who belong to Him—the question is are we listening? Learn to H.E.A.R. from God:

H – Have faith in God’s word
“So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11)

God’s word is the foundation for us to hear from Him. He won’t tell us to do anything outside the realm of the Bible. However, for us to hear means that we need to know God’s word so that our faith can be built up.

E – Expect God to speak in His way and timing.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:13-14)

Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can hear from God. He speaks to our hearts, through our circumstances, through other people, and through nature. By having an expectation we open up our hearts to hear from Him.

A – Ask God for wisdom and clarity.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:5-8)

How do we know what we hear was from God? How do we know it isn’t from within ourselves or from the devil? We first ask ourselves is “does this glorify God or is this about us?” Since we are aware of Satan’s devices and mode of operation is to kill, steal, and destroy—we know he doesn’t want the attention on God, instead he wants to steal God’s glory

R – Repent of your sins so you can hear.
“If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. (Psalm 66:18)

It’s difficult to hear from God when we are living in sin—just like a clogged pipe keeps the water from moving so a clogged heart has trouble hearing from God. We can keep the lines of communication clear by confessing our sins and completely turning away from it.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to hear Your voice in my life. Help me to know the truth of Your word and the voice of the Spirit so that I may follow the right paths. In Jesus’ name, amen.
