She asked for nothing except what Hegai the king’s eunuch, who had charge of the women, advised
When Esther was taken to into the king’s palace to be part of a beauty pageant that she didn’t request, it had to be a confusing time for this Jewish girl. Every young woman chosen would live out the rest of her life either as queen or as a part of the king’s harem. To not be chosen after a night with the king may have devastated many young women who lost their virginity, only to spend the rest of their lives in a harem.
When it was her turn to come before the king, Esther had to choose what she would wear and how she would present herself. She could’ve requested what she saw other girls wearing or even something similar to the former queen, Vashti’s, taste.
Instead, Esther requested that Hegai, the king’s eunuch, choose for her everything she needed. It was a simple act of humility that didn’t have to end with the desired results. She trusted someone who had the knowledge and experience of working with young women and knew the king very well. As a result, she was eventually crowned as queen and was the point of intercession that saved the Jewish people from genocide.
Esther models what to do when we need to make crucial decisions–that is to turn to God. It could be about purchasing a new house or car, taking on a new job, or getting married. Our success rests primarily on our desire to humbly turn to God’s will. When we ask God to lead us in His direction rather than our own desires, we experience the joy and peace of knowing that we have exactly what He wants for us.
