Why must we Struggle

Divider
For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

James 1:3

If we were to get grades for the “testing of our faith”, what would it be? Some of us might get an A for excellent faith in the midst of trials. While others of us could get an F for not even trying to walk in the faith. Most of us may get a C as an average attempt to keep the faith when we are tested.

We know God doesn’t give us grades for the testing of our faith, but why must we struggle? It’s not fun nor entertaining to find our faith tested. Yet, if we are never tested in our faith, how will we mature to get beyond the infancy of spirituality towards true growth? The Lord never wastes our pain, in fact, it’s a part of His plan for us to mature.

We find our example from the caterpillars who must press and work their way out of the shell in order to become a butterfly. If we were to help the caterpillar break through, it won’t have the strength to fly because the fluids in the struggle must make way to the wings.

Just like the caterpillar, the struggles in our faith will work a greater dependence on God. Through our struggles, we learn to lean less on ourselves and more on Him. This dual working in and out of us allows a deeper experience of God that we can’t have any other way.

We must struggle at times in our faith that God’s grace and strength will be revealed. Our struggles aren’t random and they filter through God’s fingers of love before reaching us. As we put our trust in Him, we will fly to greater heights of His presence.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I don’t always understand my struggles, but I do know that You are with me. Help me to learn and grow so that I can be used in Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
