In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.
Going through long trials in my life have stretched me spiritually, emotionally, and physically, all the while resisting the question: why me? As a maturing believer, I know better than to ask that question, just as a teenager doesn’t fall out in a temper tantrum over spilled milk (or do they?).
What makes us think that we shouldn’t have times of suffering just like our brothers and sisters across the world? Should we not have times of crying, sleepless nights, and overwhelming disappointments? Should we expect everything to always go as we planned it? No, not if we want to grow in our faith.
While the agony of our situations hasn’t necessarily changed, we can. We can grow to be tougher and tender—tough on the deceitfulness of sin in our lives and tender towards those who are deeply wounded. We aren’t perfect, but we are being perfected through the grace of God to be more like His Son, Jesus Christ.
So if we embrace the question ‘why me’ in trials and temptations, should we then also ask the same question in times of blessings? We don’t hear ‘why me’ when things are going well. Why should we have a relationship with Jesus Christ instead of living a lie? Should we expect to have joy and peace in the midst of a storm? Should we enjoy the grace of God that gives us strength to make it day to day?
Why me? Because we are uniquely chosen by God to go through this time of trial to become everything He wants us to be. Why me? Because no pain or tears are ever wasted in the kingdom of God. Why me? Because He is preparing us for a greater glory in order to draw more people to the cross. Why me? Because we are growing into this relationship with God slowly but assured of His presence and hand over our lives.
Dear Lord, help me to resist the pity party for myself and trust that You have everything I need to make it day to day. Strengthen my faith in You. Amen.
