Whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death.
Do we really care about the backslider? Or would we rather shake our heads at those who’ve turned away from truth to live a lie? It’s easier to look down on them for their weaknesses than stop and go after them with patient endurance. Many times those who’ve wandered from the faith are deceived into believing they will find purpose, happiness, and self-fulfillment. Yet their passions deceive them and true contentment remains outside their reach.
As ambassadors of Jesus Christ, we are called to pray for and seek after the wanderers. It’s not enough to occasionally think about them—we are called to move with action in love and not in judgment. Many times they’ve already condemned themselves, and Satan constantly reminds them they aren’t good enough for God.
Yet none of us are good enough for God. We are only living righteously because of His grace and not because of anything we’ve done. Everyone who is a follower of Jesus Christ is called to care about the wanderers in our lives.
Even as we pursue them, they may reject us or ridicule our faith. Yet when we speak the truth of God’s word in love, seeds of hope drop into their hearts. God’s word will do the work because it will accomplish what He means for it to do (Isaiah 55:11). We can’t change the wanderer’s mind or actions. However, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can be instruments of God’s love and peace to show them the right way back home.
When we go back for the wanderer, we are going back for ourselves as well, for many of us have failed and fallen short of God’s glory. Yet He always went back for us, and we can do the same for the backsliders.
Dear Lord, help me to be more than a spectator of the wanderers in my life. I pray for the right words in due season to draw them back to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
