David and his men protected Nabal’s servants and animals. As a result, they requested food and comfort for their service. Nabal foolishly disregarded and disrespected David and his men. David was so filled with anger that he was going to destroy everyone and everything about Nabal. However, Nabal’s servants quickly requested that Abagail, Nabal’s wife intervene before there was great bloodshed. She wisely came to David with more than what he requested which diverted certain tragedy.
Many women are married to husbands who make foolish choices based on the folly in their hearts. These women have suffered spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical deprivation as well as embarrassment because of having Nabal-like husbands. What is a wise Christian wife to do when she finds herself in this situation?
Step #1) She turns to God in prayer for wisdom and direction. (James 1:5, Psalm 32:8-9)
Step #2) She finds scriptures to give her strength when she feels weak. (2 Timothy 3:16)
Step #3) She seeks out wise, godly women for advice and encouragement. (Proverbs 12:15)
Step #4) She resists the temptation to dishonor or disrespect her husband. (1 Peter 3:1-2)
Step #5) She models grace and compassion publicly and privately. (Proverbs 31:10-31)
Step #6) She keeps praying for her husband regardless of his behavior. (Proverbs 18:1-8)
Step #7) She knows God is going to change things for her in His timing. (Genesis 15:20)
Abagail wasn’t a perfect wife, but she faithfully lived up to the place where her husband fell short. Instead of being foolish alongside of him, she was known for being a beautiful and wise woman. God blessed and kept her even after Nabal’s death. The Lord will take care of the women who turn to Him.
Dear Lord, my husband has been foolish and I don’t know what to do. Lead me in the right paths of wisdom and righteousness for Your name’s sake. In Jesus’ name, amen.
