When God Speaks

But at your word I will let down the nets.

Luke 5:5

When Jesus came upon Peter—he was cleaning out his nets from the night before. Peter and the other fishermen had fished all night and caught nothing. Jesus came into Peter’s boat and began teaching the people. After He finished He told Peter to let his nets into the deep for a catch. Peter could’ve explained to Jesus that (1) fishing at night is better than the day, (2) the fish would not be around because of all the people and commotion, or (3) how he just finished cleaning his nets.

However, instead he said, “but at your word…” As a result, they caught so much fish that their nets began to break and they had to get help from the other fishermen. Peter, the other fishermen, and their families were all blessed because he listened and obeyed at Christ’ word.

We can be like Peter and think we’ve done all we can do. So, when God speaks to our hearts, we are tempted to ask ‘why should we try one more time’? Yet, when God speaks, it means that it’s time for us to obey even if we don’t always understand the big picture of His will.

Jesus was sent by God to save our souls and to restore sweet communion between us. A part of our joy is that we can hear God speak—but are we listening? If we are listening, are we responding with action?

Life would be different if we would respond to the nudging of the Holy Spirit with “but at Your word, I will…” We would discover new miracles and God-interventions in our lives. Our families and friends will experience the shared blessings of our obedience. Just like Peter, we could have all kinds of excuses, but our greatest victory to is to obey His word.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I desire to obey when You speak to me through Your word and in my heart. Help me to push past my doubts and trust in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In His Service,
