When God Says Enough

Divider

Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.

Deuteronomy 3:26

Moses messed up in a major way. He was commanded by God to speak to a rock in order for water to come out. Moses was angry, and instead of speaking to it, he hit the rock. The water came out, and the people’s thirst was calmed. However, his act of unbelief and failure to uphold God as holy cost him the opportunity to join the people in the Promised Land. He was able to see it with his eyes but to never step a foot on it, even after 40 years of wandering with a difficult and stubborn people.

Moses pleaded with God to change his mind more than once. Yet God’s reply was, “No.” Just like Moses, it’s hard for us to accept God’s word of ‘no’ when we desperately want something else. We may want God to answer and perform in a certain way, but when He says ‘enough’ and don’t ask anymore, it’s done.

We can choose to act like spoiled children and may even turn away from our loving Father. Or we can choose to accept God’s answer of ‘no’ and move on from it. It’s a difficult emotional step to overcome. Yet if we do, it can accomplish a major spiritual maturity in our Christian journey.

Our heavenly Father isn’t some kind of Santa Claus sitting on the throne waiting to answer all of our prayers just as we request. Rather, He’s a loving and concerned God who wants His children to grow up spiritually and know His ways more intimately. He will allow a season of suffering in order to get us where we need to be. Those whom God loves He will discipline for a time. Yet even when God says ‘no,’ we can take peace because He only gives us what is best for us, just like a loving Father.

Prayer

Dear Lord, help me to accept Your answer of ‘no’ in my life. I want to live a completely surrendered life to You and grow up spiritually. Amen.
