Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do.
After sharing the wonderful news of Abraham and Sarah’s upcoming pregnancy and birth of their son, God asked if He should hide his plan to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Why would the God of the universe feel compelled to share this with a mere human? Yet Abraham was called a friend of God (James 2:23). This is significant because of what friendships tend to entail: trust, transparency, love, etc.
As God’s friend, Abraham was able to take part in a conversation with God about His impending judgment on two great cities. Abraham immediately responded with requests of intercession for those people. He bravely kept asking God for mercy if there were only 10 people in the city who were righteous. God promised to relent His judgment if this were true. Even though 10 people weren’t found, God graciously delivered Abraham’s nephew Lot and his family from certain destruction.
As heirs of Abraham, we can build a friendship with God that will be evident in our growing faith in Him. Abraham became a friend of God because he believed in Him even though his own body was diminishing. If we step out in faith and trust in God against the odds in our lives, our friendship with God will become stronger.
As we have the opportunity to be friends with God, we will intercede for others in our country, cities, and communities. We will pray for discernment from the Holy Spirit to show us how to intercede for those in ministry around the world. This friendship with God gives us insight into the heart and mind of God. Our prayers will be less about ourselves and more about building His kingdom throughout the world.
Dear Lord, I want to be Your friend as Abraham was. Help me to grow in my faith to intercede and know Your will for the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
