What is my Isaac

Take your son…whom you love…and offer him there as a burnt offering.

Genesis 22:2

Isaac was the promised son for Abraham and he loved him intensely. Imagine the years of joy that filled their hearts watching their baby grow up. Yet, the day came when God told Abraham to offer his only son as a burnt offering.

Have you ever wanted something so badly that you could hardly stand it? What was it like to finally see that prayer answered? Most of us are ecstatic and filled with overwhelming joy…we tell everyone who will listen about God answering our prayers. Yet, what is our reaction when God commands us to give back our “Isaac” and what can we learn from Abraham’s example?

Abraham obeyed immediately. (Genesis 22:3)
There was no discussion between God and Abraham. He didn’t sit around and ponder God’s command. He moved forward without hesitation. Our response to God’s command should be immediate.

Abraham went prepared. (Genesis 22:3)
He saddled the donkey, brought servants, and gathered the wood. When God commands us to give up our “Isaac”; there may be things we need to get done. We must resist the urge to stall through unpreparedness.

Abraham responded in faith. (Genesis 22:8)
When Isaac asked about the sacrifice, Abraham responded “God will provide.” This was an act of faith that God will provide what we need when we need it. We can trust in the Lord to pull it altogether even though we don’t understand His plan.

Abraham planned to follow through. (Genesis 22:10)
Regardless of what Abraham felt in his heart, he wasn’t going to pull back from God’s command. As we are asked to give back our “Isaac”, we need to set our hearts and minds to complete what we’ve started in faith. Just like Abraham, God will intervene to accomplish His perfect will in us.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I know it is in Your power to give and to take away. Lead me in the paths of trusting in You more everyday with what is dearest to my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
