Unless I See

Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails.

John 20:25

All of the disciples had seen Jesus except Thomas. He refused to believe that Jesus was alive based on what he saw at the cross. When Jesus appeared to him, he fell on his knees and confessed Him as Lord. Jesus responded, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Who knows what was going through Thomas’ mind when all the disciples were affirming Jesus’ resurrection. Maybe he really wanted to believe, but he knew what he saw at the crucifixion. Perhaps he believed that the other disciples were out of their minds. Whatever the reason, he didn’t believe until he saw Jesus standing before Him.

Before we get too hard on Thomas, we need to take a good look at our own faith. Do we withhold giving to others because we don’t believe God will cause blessings to overflow us? (Luke 6:38) Do we struggle with feeling alone because we don’t really believe that God is with us all the time? (Hebrews 13:5) Do we stop praying because we don’t really believe that God answers prayer? (Ephesians 6:18)

Are we like Thomas? Unless we see the blessings, feel the presence, and hear the answers, we won’t believe. However, if we do what we know is right regardless of what we don’t see, we are blessed by God. We stand on His word in faith in spite of the circumstances surrounding us. We don’t have to see how everything is going to work out; we simply trust in the Lord to do above and beyond what we ask or expect. He is moved by our faith in Him.

Prayer

Dear Lord, sometimes I’m like Thomas and have a hard time believing. Help me to believe in Your word in spite of the pressing circumstances around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
