Unholy Alliances

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers

2 Corinthians 6:14

Most of the kings of Israel who came after King David didn’t follow God with all their hearts. In fact, many of them led the people astray in worshiping idols. However, King Jehoshaphat was one of the good kings of Judah. He followed after God with all his heart and destroyed many of the places of idol worship. Yet Jehoshaphat had one major weakness—he made alliances with the wicked kings of Israel.

Because Judah and Israel were once one nation under King David, Jehoshaphat may have been seeking peace with those he considered his brothers. As he said to King Ahab in 2 Chronicles 18:3, “I am as you are, my people as your people. We will be with you in the war.” However, making unholy alliances with wicked kings cost him soldiers lost in war, ships lost at sea, and a rebuke from God through a prophet (2 Chronicles 19:2).

As believers, we are not to be unequally yoked in marriages or in business partnerships or any endeavor in which we tie up our family, finances, or future with those who reject God. This isn’t to mean that we can’t have family, friends, or co-workers who aren’t saved or that we can’t do business with unbelievers–we just don’t tie ourselves up in partnerships with them. We can still have friendships with unbelievers because we are the light and salt to lead them to Christ.

We resist yoking up ourselves in commitments that can affect our relationship with God and family. Being yoked together means that both of you are living in agreement with God as your Savior. It’s a different relationship that is set apart because of a unity in Christ to bring Him glory in all that you do.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I need your wisdom in my relationships that are closest to my heart. Help me to resist unholy alliances that will drive a wedge in my relationship with You and my family. Amen.
