God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
We are called to peace, not to be in constant conflict with each other. We are called to resolve conflicts quickly with grace and mercy. The following checklist is for those who are tired of fighting.
( ) Submit yourselves, then, to God (v. 7).
To submit to God means we recognize that we’re not in control of our lives because we’re ultimately accountable to God for what we say and do.
( ) Resist the devil, and he will flee you (v. 8).
The devil will attempt to convince us of the worst things about a person and provide us with evil ideas for dealing with them.
( ) Come near to God and he will come near to you (v. 8).
God wants us to come to Him, confess our sins, and be set free from the guilt, shame, and regret.
( ) Wash your hands, you sinners (v. 8).
If we did anything in this conflict that didn’t honor God, we need to confess our sins to one another.
( ) Purify your hearts, you double-minded (v. 8).
We need to look intently at our hearts where pride, jealousy, or envy can reside and ask God to purify us.
( ) Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom (v. 9).
We can recognize the suffering of Jesus because of our sin and turn away from it.
( ) Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up (v. 10).
We choose forgiveness in the vision of the bigger picture of how we’ve been forgiven.
( ) Brothers [and sisters], do not slander one another (v. 11).
We stay above the conflict by not talking about it with other people, except if we are seeking wise counsel from a mature believer.
Dear Lord, help me to walk in obedience to Your word as I deal with this conflict in my life. I want the way of peace. Amen.
