Releasing Regret

Divider

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1

Regret can be a powerful inhibitor in the lives of women believers. We get tricked by Satan to live out our lives in order to make up for the things that we have done in the past. While there may be consequences for the things that we have done, we are not to be lifelong prisoners of our past regrets.

Through the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we have been set free to live out our lives independent of guilt. Many times people who are laden with their own guilty consciences will attempt to keep us in our place with reminders of our past sins. This is exactly the devil’s motive of operation. If he can keep us locked in that mentality, we can never really be used by God to accomplish great things. In fact, our labor will be more marked by duty and payback than that of a grateful spirit.

Getting entangled in regret didn’t happen overnight, and getting free from it usually takes a little more time. The first step is to step back from the situation in which we have regret and ask ourselves: Did I seek God’s forgiveness? Did I receive God’s forgiveness? If so, we are on our way to being free if we accept His forgiveness in faith, regardless of how we feel or think or the circumstances surrounding our lives.

After we have received God’s forgiveness, we then ask God what He would have us do next. Do you need to seek the forgiveness of someone you hurt? Do you owe for something you did? Many times we may not be able to give due recompense for our failings; however, it’s important to stay sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

The last step is to take God at His word—He doesn’t condemn us! Recognize and memorize Romans 8:1 every time the devil wants to pull you back into the condemning thoughts.

Prayer

Dear Lord, since I’ve sought Your forgiveness and followed Your leading, I know that I’m free of condemnation. Give me the endurance to fight the negative thoughts and receive Your freedom while releasing regret. Amen.
