The Stench of Sin

Divider
But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God.

Isaiah 59:2

Sometimes I walk in my house and immediately sense a bad smell coming from somewhere. It’s difficult for me to ignore it and I have to get rid of it. It always surprises me when other people don’t immediately pick it up. Most of the time, they’ve been used to it and it doesn’t smell as bad to them.

Our sin is a stench that we can’t hide from God regardless of our excuses. For a believer to continue in sin is like shoveling manure into their home and wondering why it smells all the time. God will never bless our mess. Instead, He will bring enough pain and misery to our life that we will desire repentance and forgiveness.

Remaining in a sinful lifestyle will always cause a divide in our relationship with God. Oftentimes, we get used to our sin and don’t realize how it has weaken our spirituality in Christ. We won’t be able to pray the same way and expect great results. Our hearts will become cold towards the word of God that once used to prick our consciences. We are less likely to practice servanthood and engagement with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

There’s only one way to deal with the stench of sin—find the root and get rid of it. We come to a place of acknowledging our sin and turning away from it. No other method works except a clean break because our relationship with God is at stake. We are deceiving ourselves if we think we can remain in sin and commune with Him at the same time. It’s time for an airing out of our spiritual houses and get right with God.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I confess that I’ve sinned and I need your forgiveness. Cleanse me of my unrighteousness and I will follow you with all of my heart. Amen.
