The Power of Self-Deception

Many of us are stunned by those who believe that their murderous acts against others are blessed by God. They continue to wreak havoc around the world to instill fear even in the hearts of believers. Regardless of where a person has lived or their belief system, they can’t deny the ability to know right from wrong in their hearts. Yet the power of self-deception overcomes the inward consciousness of men and women to do horrendous acts to humanity.

Before we can judge them, we must also take a deeper look at ourselves. How many times do we make allowances for our selfish and unrighteous actions even though we know that they are wrong? We are also subject to the power of self-deception if we don’t stand firm in the faith every single day.

Most of us will never cross the line to commit acts of terrorism. Yet we engage in gossip that can destroy another person’s reputation. We allow ourselves the pleasures in sexual relationships without being married. We make excuses for our lying tongues that mask as exaggerations, and we build ourselves up in pride and stubbornness every day. This should not happen in the household of faith.

The Lord provides us a way out if we are willing to humble ourselves, confess our sins, and turn away from sinfulness. Knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior can break the power of self-deception. This “knowing” is more than just being an acquaintance of Jesus; it’s an intimate relationship of getting to the heart of our issues. He loves us too much to let us continue deceiving ourselves in sinful behaviors. There is a way that seems right to us—but we must raise the righteousness standard to that of Jesus Christ in order to avoid the pitfall of eternal death.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I confess my self-deception in sin. I pray for Your forgiveness and the strength to move forward in the intimacy of a relationship with Jesus Christ. Amen.
