The Myth Deception

And will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

2 Timothy 4:4

All of us have heard myths and fables that have been passed down the generations. However, when it comes to our faith in God and in His word—we must be careful to always consider God’s word greater than anything else. Myths are rooted in man’s explanation for purpose, meaning, and reasoning. Certain untruths can lead people away from the compelling voice of the Spirit and towards hollow earthly pursuits. How do we know the difference between a myth and God’s truth?

#1) The truth will underscore the need for a Savior, while a myth will devalue the need for salvation through Jesus Christ.

“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.” (1 John 4:9)

#2) The truth will glorify God as Creator and Lord, while a myth will elevate human ingenuity and athletic prowess.

“Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.” (Revelation 15:4)

#3) The truth will expose and condemn sin and sinful behavior, while a myth will downplay sin’s depravity.

“For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.” (John 3:20)

#4) The truth will lead us towards spiritual decisions looking towards eternal reward, while a myth will deny the existence of an afterlife and the consequences of sinful acts.

“So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:12)

#5) The truth will seek genuine harmony and relationship with God and people, while the myth embraces the worship of nature and created things.

“Because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. (Romans 1:25)

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray for a spirit of discernment to know the difference between a truth and a myth. Help me to walk in truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
