Recently I witnessed a marriage of two young people who kept their attention on God through the dating, engagement, and wedding ceremony. It was a beautiful and convicting witness of the importance and sacredness of the marriage covenant. Unfortunately, many couples spend more time on the decorations, outfits, food, and other extraneous parts of a wedding—than they do on the covenant they are making to God and each other.
A marriage covenant for life shouldn’t be taken lightly. God will hold each person responsible for keeping the covenant. As believers in Christ, we can uphold the value of marital C-O-V-E-N-A-N-T by:
C – Carefully considering God’s will over our own will before marriage.
O – Ordaining our engagement and marriage ceremony according to God’s word.
V – Vetting out our potential spouse’s spiritual walk thoroughly.
E – Engaging in pre-engagement and pre-marital counseling.
N – Never compromising our sexual integrity or purity.
A – Accepting the advice of our godly leaders and/or mentors.
N – Navigating and embracing our role in the marriage according to God’s commands in the scriptures.
T – Taking our time to intently pray about this lifetime commitment.
There is grace from God to keep and uphold the marital covenant. The Lord blesses those who choose the covenant over their own desires especially during the tough patches of marriage. Instead of experiencing the agony of a broken covenant that causes pain and plunges families into disarray, it’s vital to carefully understand the sacredness and value of the marriage covenant. Those who seek God first with a pure heart and open mind will find His peace, joy, and love long after the marriage ceremony.
Dear Lord, help me to understand the sacredness of the marriage covenant in my life and to support my brothers and sisters in Christ as they make this commitment for life. Amen.
