Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.

2 Kings 4:7

A widow of one of the prophets came to Elisha because a creditor wanted to take her two sons as slaves. Elisha asked the woman about what she already had in her house—which was only a jar of oil. He instructed her to gather as many vessels as she and her sons could borrow.

Afterwards, she went into her house, shut the door, and poured oil into the other jars. She obeyed in faith and they were able to fill every jar full of oil to the last one. Elisha instructed her to sell the jars of oil to pay off the debt and for the family to live off of what was left over. God blessed her with more than enough.

He is the God of yesterday, today, and forevermore—He doesn’t change. (Hebrews 13:8) Just as He blessed the widow, the Lord blesses His people above and beyond what we ask or expect. Yet, we also need to obey what He commands us to do according to His word, if we want to see His blessings. What if the widow borrowed only a few jars because she was embarrassed or doubted the prophet’s instructions? It would’ve meant a lesser blessing for her.

Our obedience opens the door for the God of more than enough. Not just in our physical needs, but our spiritual needs of peace in the time of turmoil, calm in the times of anxiety, joy in the times of pain, and love in the times of brokenness. We can experience the fullness of God’s blessings because we are His children and He is the God of more than enough.

Dear Lord, I need to know the God of more than enough. My needs are great, but You are greater. Increase my faith in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In His Service,
