In peace I will lie down and sleep.
Sleep is a necessity in order for us to live successfully. Without consistent sleep, we can run our bodies to a place of brokenness. When our sleep is broken, it can be difficult for us to concentrate on our jobs or make good decisions. God made our bodies to need sleep; therefore, we can’t go a long period of time without it. It can be dangerous for us spiritually, emotionally, and physically if we are sleep deprived.
The Lord wants us to live balanced lives, and we need to discipline ourselves to sleep soundly. Follow these steps in order to get yourself S-W-E-E-T sleep.
S – Start with prayer (Philippians 4:6-8). Every night, pray to God using the ACTS prayer method (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication). Release all of your concerns to God, knowing that He is in control and will take care of you.
W – Work out unhealthy foods or additives from your diet (1 Corinthians 6:19). Be mindful of taking in caffeinated drinks during the day. The caffeine will remain in your system long past your work day.
E – Ease yourself into a nightly routine. (Proverbs 12:5). Allow your mind to rest from work and other concerns of the day with a plan to follow every night. This could be a bath, preparation for the morning, or anything that keeps your mind and spirit calm.
E – Exercise regularly on a schedule (Proverbs 31:17). Strengthening our bodies with weights and getting our aerobic routine help us sleep more soundly at night. By keeping our exercises simple and a part of our daily lives, we rest better and wake up more ready for the day.
T – Turn off the TV and/or Internet devices at least an hour before bedtime. It’s good for our minds to experience a rest from electronic entertainment that causes our minds distress and anxiety.
Our Creator made our bodies to need a good night’s rest in order that we can serve Him more efficiently during the day. Take the necessary steps to get a sweet sleep in the Lord.
Dear Lord, I pray for Your wisdom and strength to make the right choices in order to get a good night’s rest. Thank You for Your hand over my rest. Amen.
